Social capital is a key indicator facilitating social exchange under conditions of uncertainty and risk, making it an essential and vital element in achieving social order. In this regard, political trust, as one of the components of social trust generally defined as citizens' trust in political institutions, is a significant indicator of political legitimacy that seems to have been significantly damaged in many countries worldwide in recent decades. Various reasons have been cited for this decline, with one of the influential factors being social media. This study aims to examine the direct and indirect impacts of social media on the political trust of Iranian citizens using secondary analysis method and based on World Values Survey (WVS) data. The research results indicate that firstly social media directly have a significant and positive impact on political distrust, leading to a decline in individuals' trust in political institutions. Secondly, social media indirectly and by fostering cultural changes, such as reinforcing secular values and emancipation among citizens, significantly contribute to the increase in political distrust. It is worth mentioning that 21% of the variance in political distrust is influenced by the research variables.
