The place of economic diplomacy in improving the national image and promoting China's soft power (consequences for the Islamic Republic of Iran)

Abstract

Soft power is the ability to create compliance through credibility in domestic and foreign public opinion and indirect influence on other global actors regardless of hard power sources such as military power, geographic restrictions and economic sanctions, which is increasingly receiving the attention of international actors and analysts. Presenting the national image and brand is one of the main factors in soft power, which itself is considered a side effect and sometimes a direct result of countries' economic diplomacy. The main question is how there is a relationship between strengthening the dimensions of economic diplomacy, which means bilateral exploitation between the foreign policy and the economy of countries, with the improvement of the national image and, as a result, the promotion of their soft power? Therefore, the aim of the current research was to examine and analyze the place of economic diplomacy in improving the national image and promoting soft power, relying on the example of China. Examining the experience of China's economic diplomacy with a case study method and a descriptive-analytical approach in this article shows that this country is one of the successful examples that by designing and implementing a dynamic and effective type of commercial diversification, direct and joint foreign investments. With the priority of developing countries and infrastructure and basic technology areas, strengthening tourism, granting development aid, managing the flow of immigrants and creating regional and international economic initiatives, it has been able to achieve a significant transformation in addition to obtaining direct economic and political benefits. This approach and its results in China's experience can be exploited to a significant extent in formulating strategies, policies and taking appropriate measures for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
