Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to delineate a multidimensional framework of naturalistic decision-making strategies in sport. Adopting a post-modern paradigm and thematic analysis approach, the research involved 15 experts from sport management, coaching, and related industries, selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews until thematic saturation was reached (after 15 interviews). Analysis was conducted using thematic network analysis comprising basic, organizing, and global themes in MAXQDA version 2024 software. Inter-coder reliability was confirmed with Cohen’s kappa coefficient (0.79) across four selected interviews. Findings revealed 180 initial propositions with a total frequency of 455, categorized into eight main themes: cognitive-perceptual strategies (18.2%), emotional-psychological (15.2%), organizational-structural (13.4%), team-interactive (12.5%), tactical-strategic (12.5%), coaching-leadership (10.5%), educational-learning (10.1%), and technological-supportive tools (7.5%). This multidimensional framework extends naturalistic decision making (NDM) beyond classical models (such as RPD) by integrating emotional-cultural, collective-cognitive, and structural-technological dimensions, making it highly applicable to dynamic, high-pressure sport environments. Results emphasize the primacy of cognitive and emotional strategies and recommend training programs focused on real-situation simulation, emotion regulation, shared mental model development, and gradual integration of analytical tools. The study provides deeper insight into naturalistic decision-making mechanisms within the Iranian sport context and offers a practical framework for enhancing competitive performance, reducing decision errors, and supporting sustainable athlete and team development.
